TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR WELLNESS:
1. Challenge the mind early in childhood. Early education, schooling and dealing
directly with the struggles of everyday life prepare the body, mind and spirit
for greater challenges in the future.
2. Avoid overuse of your brain. Studies from The University of Florida suggest
that daily mental exercises—problem-solving, object identification, reading,
etc—can offset some of the decline in thinking skills.
3. Protect your body from substance abuse. The effects of heavy smoking and alcohol
drinking in the body and mind go beyond loss of memory; the permanent damage to
the brain and other organs can cost the life of the abuser.
4. Do physical exercises and maintain a good posture. They prevent falls, make
your bones strong and prevent fractures.
5. Eat healthful meals. Nutritious meals also make well bodies, minds and spirits.
6. Accept aging, learn about it and deal with those age-related health issues
squarely. Those who can anticipate the setbacks of aging are better equipped to
deal with them; denying the onset, which is sure to come anyway, can delay the
treatment of age-related conditions which can still be reversible at the early
stages.
7. Temper your worrisome tensions. Anxiety, tension, and stress may only lead
to more physical and mental problems. Learning to relax, forgive and let go will
reduce tension and ease the spirit.
8. Refresh your ageing mind creatively. Learning new skills are sure to stimulate
those waning neurons.
9. Nurture your relationships. Those with good social supports also have longer,
happier lives.
10. Lastly, be content and be grateful. Depressed people always think (and believe)
that other people are better off than they are, and therefore will never be happy.
